History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it is said to have begun with a festival conducted by an imperial envoy in Kōgyoku 2 (643). After it was destroyed by fire in medieval warfare, Hitotsuyanagi Naomori, lord of Kuroda Castle, restored it at the end of the Sengoku period. In the Edo period it became a place of prayer for the Owari domain and was known for prayers against smallpox.
