History and things to know

According to temple tradition, it was built in the Jōwa era (834–848) by Jikaku Daishi Ennin at the wish of Emperor Saga. At the beginning of the Kamakura period Hōnen Shōnin lived here and taught, gathering the devotion of Kujō Kanezane and others. The main outer gate is said to be the yakuimon gate of Fushimi Castle, moved here by Suminokura Ryōi.
