History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it began in Jinki 4 (727), when Sana, a man from Mutsu, sensed the appearance of Sarutahiko no Ōkami during a voyage, built a small shrine beside a Shinmei shrine by the sea and invited the kami there. After a fire in 1252 it moved to Rikyū Hachimangū on the present site, and the shrine buildings, devastated during the Ikkō uprisings, were restored by Maeda Toshiie in 1586. The main sanctuary, built by Toshitsune, the third lord, is an Ishikawa Prefecture designated cultural property.
