History and things to know

According to the shrine's tradition, it was founded in Saikō 3 (856), and the Montoku Tennō Jitsuroku is said to record that two kami descended to the coast of Ōarai and announced that they had returned to save the people. Following this oracle, Sukunahikona no Mikoto was enshrined at this shrine and Ōnamochi no Mikoto at Ōarai Isosaki Jinja; the following year it was listed as an official shrine, in the Engishiki it was a Myōjin Taisha, and in Meiji 18 it became a Kokuhei Chūsha.
