History and things to know

According to the official guide, when an order to abolish the Sasaguri Shikoku pilgrimage was issued during the anti-Buddhist movement (haibutsu kishaku) of the Meiji era, after many years of petitions by local people, Nanzō-in was invited from Kōyasan in Meiji 32 and the continuation of the pilgrimage was permitted. In Heisei 7 a reclining statue of Shaka (Shaka nehanzō) was completed, housing relics of the Buddha presented from Myanmar.
