History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, because the world was in turmoil after the great Tengyō earthquake and the rebellion of Taira no Masakado, Yuki Daimyōjin, which had been enshrined in the imperial palace, is said to have been moved to Kurama in Tengyō 3 (940) by decree of Emperor Suzaku. The Kurama Fire Festival is said to have begun as a reenactment of the procession of that transfer, and in Keichō 12 (1607) Toyotomi Hideyori rebuilt the main hall and worship hall.
