Staying close to the suffering of the six realms

The Six Jizō are a faith in Jizō Bosatsu, who saves the beings of each of the six paths (rokudō): hell, hungry ghosts, animals, ashura, humans and heavenly beings. People praying for the salvation of the dead have also enshrined them at places such as the entrances of cemeteries. Seen together, the six figures express Jizō's work of bringing salvation to every circumstance.

There are several lineages of names for the Six Jizō

Shōhōin lists one set of six that includes 預天賀地蔵, and another set of six that includes 地持地蔵. The combinations of names, forms and held objects are not fixed. This site also keeps the two lineages separate; it does not mean that all twelve form a single set of Six Jizō.
