Good fortune and virtue, and the symbol of the giving hand
The hand forming the wish-granting mudra is handed down as a form that receives people's wishes. Accompanied by the four bodhisattvas Kongōhō, Kongōkō, Kongōdō and Kongōshō, Hōshō Nyorai shows the workings of wisdom and of good fortune and virtue within the mandala. The "treasure" (hō) in the name Hōshō is an expression of a buddha's virtue that is not limited to material wealth.

Relationship with Kaifuke-ō Nyorai of the Womb Realm
Shōhōin's explanation also mentions a view that Hōshō Nyorai and Kaifuke-ō Nyorai are the same buddha. Hōshō Nyorai belongs to the Diamond Realm and Kaifuke-ō Nyorai to the Womb Realm (Taizōkai), and each is represented as the buddha of the south. This is introduced as a view that relates the two mandalas; the names, forms and words to chant are presented according to the respective sources.
