History and things to know

According to the temple's history, in Bunmei 2 (1470) Zen Master 南極寿星, guided by a white horse, built a hermitage at 杉室, and a temple was built there with a donation from Onozaki Tomomichi. It flourished as a central Zen monastery of the Sōtō school in Hitachi, and Tokugawa Mitsukuni is said to have visited it often. The triad was brought from Chōkoku-ji in Shinshū in Shōwa 35.
