History and things to know

According to the temple's tradition, when a terrible epidemic spread in Tenpyō 9 (737), Gyōki, sent by command of Emperor Shōmu, carved a buddha image, enshrined it and founded the temple. In Meiji 36 the principal image was designated a National Treasure under the system of that time, and in Shōwa 46 the main hall was restored and repaired following the form in which Mogami Yoshimori rebuilt it in Tenbun 12.
