History and things to know
According to the shrine's tradition, in the reign of Emperor Jomei, En no Ozunu received a divine message on this mountain, built a shrine in a rock cave and enshrined the kami as Hassho Gongen, and this is said to be the beginning of the Okusha (inner shrine). In the Middle Ages the halls of Genryū-ji stood in rows, but they were burned by the Takeda forces in Eiroku 4 (1561); the shrine was renamed Hassho Ōkami in Meiji 2 and Kosuge Jinja in Meiji 33.
