History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, by an imperial edict of Emperor Junna a shrine praying for peace throughout the realm was built on Miwayama (today's Ōhirasan). It is said that in Tenchō 4 (827) Ennin entered the mountain bearing an imperial plaque, and in Meitoku 3 (1392) a plaque with the shrine's name was granted by Emperor Go-Komatsu. Its buildings were lost in warfare in the Tenshō era but were restored in the early Edo period.
