History and things to know
According to shrine tradition, it began when the kami 住吉須牟地曽根ノ神 was enshrined on this spot, which was then a small island in Osaka Bay, and it is said to be one of the former sites of the Naniwa Yasoshima Festival. A love suicide that took place in the grounds in Genroku 16 (1703) became the subject of Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Sonezaki Shinjū." The present shrine buildings were built in Shōwa 32, after war damage.
