History and things to know

According to shrine tradition, it originated around Kyōtoku 2 (1453) when a woodcutter found a hot spring and, in thanks for his cure by bathing, carved a Yakushi Nyorai and enshrined it in a small shrine; this is also said to be the beginning of Yunokawa Onsen. In Jōō 3 (1654), in thanks for the recovery of Takahiro, lord of the Matsumae domain, from illness, his mother Seiryōin renewed the shrine building and offered a waniguchi (gong). The present shrine building was constructed in Shōwa 16.
